Girls in Black

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Tech:

Handheld Nikon D200, 85mm f1.8 lens set to f3.2, at 1/640th sec., ISO 500, B/W Mode, normal parameters.

For this shoot, I loved that the mom wanted to dress the girls in all black. Of course, in b/w it worked out just great. I was able to get a few more moody images than usual; and the black really set off the girls’ skin during the entire session, whether we were on the beach (as in the image above), or in the shade by the trees. I would welcome more black themed clothing for sessions.

I usually shoot with the sun behind the subjects even when they’re in open shade in order to get a certain attractive light I prefer on the faces. But for this image since the girls were going to take up such a small area in the frame, and because I couldn’t reposition the sun or building, I felt okay composing with the sun at an angle in front of them.

Girl & Leaves

- Image no longer available -

During a recent session, I was doing my usual thing letting the kids hang around until I called for them. While I was shooting a series of candids of this girl, who had easily forgotten about me and my camera, a scene came about that I won’t try too much to describe other than to just show it in an image. The girl, fully immersed in her own secluded little space, looked as if to suddenly become a doe in the woods, and ever so naturally and seemingly instinctively started nibbling on the leaves around her. I really loved it – feel honored to have witnessed it – and am glad I was able to capture a representation of that moment.

Tech info: Handheld Nikon D200, 85mm lens at f3.2, all normal settings, B/W mode, ISO 320. When I arrived at the client’s home, I went about looking for backlit leaves, and was pleased to find a nicely shaded area that was very close to what I was hoping for. The sun was behind the leaves, and I set my manual exposure for the skin in shade. Keeping my camera aimed in the same general direction allowed me to set the manual exposure then forget it, while I shot freely with little mind to my readings.
